Support our Trails

Feeling Malcontent? Line Up!

My old commute, your weekly training ride, a fisherman’s access to the river, a perfect Sunday stroll. All of these happen on the Schuykill River Trail. The problem is, there are a few parts where the trail is not connected and you have to contend with over congested streets, sightseers, dangerous trail conditions, and all sorts of other obstacles that make me no longer a surly rider, but a malcontent rider.

The Bike Coalition of Greater Philly is trying to quell my feelings about the trail by hosting a ride this up coming weekend-Fathers day to be exact. Bike Freedom Valley aims to raise the awareness and the funds needed to support building and improving the trail connectors to not only make it more safe, direct and fun, but to stop seeing my screwface every time I have to leave my trail induced happy place to rub elbows with cars trying to navigate Main St. in Manayunk.

This non competitive family fun ride is fully supported with sag support, trailside mechanics, snacks and water along the route. This does not mean that you should forget your own goodies and maintain your bike before the ride, but if something were to go wrong out there, the good volunteers have your your back, so dont fret. As a veteran of many fun rides and fundraising events, it is your best bet to be pretty self sufficient, not because the organisers and volunteers don’t do a good job, but it is to protect yourself from the charity ride equivalent of the folks that clog up airport security lines.

Folks can choose to ride as much or little of the trail as they want. You could ride from Lloyd Hall out to the first stop and come back or extend this into an all day sojourn. There are options to extend this ride to about the 60 mile mark and really get some great riding in with groups going up to Villanova and back to the trail then out to the Perkiomen Park trail. It is really going to be a great day and I hope to see you out there.

Registration is open until midnight on the 19th, but with a packet pick up time of 6:30am for a ride shove off at 7:45, you might just want to register right now. (Membership + Registration), click here, BCGP Member Registration, click here, Non-Member Registration, click here,  Student Registration, click here,  create a team? click here.
